Why does Federer get all of this praise when he is not facing high caliber players like Pete did for years?

Pete had to fend off: Edberg, Becker, Lendl, Stich, Kafelnikov, Agi, Rafter, Krajicek, Corretja, Moya, Medvedev, Muster, Courier, Martin, Brugera, and Ivanisovich. Federer is just floating along because he is playing inconsistent jokes who are getting paid for just being on the court.
