Why dont i have any sound on my computer?

i juts downloaded windows vista home premium and there is an x beside the speaker. the card is in and working cause i just had xp on here and there was sound. i open control panel, sound and there is nothing!! which is weird cause ussualy there is a mixer and now there's not so can i download one? where? thx in advance, doug
