Mp3 player compatibility with PC?

I want to get my husband an mp3 player for Christmas (he's been blasting his Megadeth in the gym and it drives everyone else nuts) but he has a Dell with Windows Media Player. No iTunes. What mp3 player is compatible with WMP?
